Making Decisions Together
Making Decisions Together is about participating in your treatment and recovery, communicating with your treatment team, and learning to make mental health treatment and recovery decisions that reflect what you want and need.
This process works well if both you and your healthcare professional are able to partner and have a spirit of teamwork.
When you have an open and honest relationship with your healthcare professional, there is a respectful exchange of information between two experts. You can share your values, preferences, experiences and life goals, and your healthcare professional can provide information on treatment and medication options and mental health services.
The process of Making Decisions Together includes:
- Gathering information
- Considering options
- Weighing the pros and cons
- Making a decision together with your doctor or treatment team
Participating in decisions empowers you to:
- Make informed decisions based on what’s important to YOU
- Receive treatment, medication, and services that reflect YOUR goals
- Make sure that decisions are right for YOUR needs and preferences. This may help motivate you to follow through with treatment and services YOU have played a part in choosing.
Try to get as much information as possible about your mental health condition and available medications and treatments. Being informed will empower and prepare you to make decisions. Remember, there are many ways to be involved. You can choose how much or how little you want to be involved in treatment decisions.
